Walker's Country Christmas

The community is invited to celebrate Christmas like it never has before.
Beginning Nov. 27, Punk Smith Park will be transformed into a Christmas Wonderland with thousands of colorful lights and animated displays, open nightly from 6-9 p.m. for walking tours. Santa Claus will make two special appearances for photographers on Dec. 12 and Dec. 19, from 6-8:30 p.m. Transportation will be available to and from Westside Junior High School to accommodate those who must park there. Free family-friendly movies will be shown every night on the big screen starting at 6 p.m. For a schedule, click here.
The Town of Walker is planning a grand holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 5. The event begins at 1 p.m. with a parade through town. Catch a glimpse of holiday floats, old-time cars, horses and more as they wind their way through the heart of Walker. Santa Claus and his merry elves will be bringing up the line.
The parade will start at Walker High School and travel east on Burgess Avenue to Highway 447. It will then travel south on Highway 447 one block to Florida Boulevard. The parade will head west on Florida Boulevard to Palmetto Street, where it will travel north to Burgess Avenue, returning to the high school.
All floats are encouraged to participate. We are looking for the largest parade in Walker's history. To sign up for free, call the Walker Municipal Building at 225-665-4356.
After that, our holiday festival begins. Area church choirs will lead the community in singing carols, with other musicians scheduled to perform as well. Santa and his elves will be available to pose for photographs. Punk Smith Park, The Walker Museum and the Community Art Gallery will be open that evening.
Mayor Bobby Font will also recognize the winners of Walker's first-ever holiday decorating contest, Deck the Town. Winners of first, second and third places in both the business and subdivision categories will be announced and will receive a ribbon and a sign to display. For more information on the contest, including entry forms, click here.
At dusk, the celebration culminates with the lighting of our 30-foot Christmas tree adorned with 1,600 feet of lights and hundreds of ornaments created by local first graders. One lucky artist will be selected to flip the switch that lights up the tree. To see pictures of the massive Norman Fir, click here. To see a sampling of our first-grade holiday talent, click here.
