Award-winning public works
Walker's Department of Public Works has been recognized statewide for its dedication to providing safe drinking water and helping to maintain a cleaner environment. In July 2010, the Louisiana Rural Water Association named the Walker DPW Energy Conservation System of the Year.
The awards recognize the outstanding efforts of rural water and wastewater systems and their personnel. Walker was chosen from among all the systems in 64 parishes across the state.
Under the leadership of Walker Mayor Bobby Font, Walker has expanded its monitoring system, which allows the department to keep a close eye on water flow at all the lift stations and address any situations before they become serious. New smoke testing introduced this year helps to pinpoint infiltration, which protects Walker's environment.
"This is the first time in years the Walker sewer system has operated in the black, and that's because we've been proactive - and not reactive - toward maintenance and repairs," says Mayor Font, who took office in January 2009. "All of these measures go a long way toward ensuring the health and safety of our residents and protecting the beautiful environment around us that we all treasure."
Mayor Font also credits the Department of Public Works team for their devotion to managing the community's water and sewer facilities. Darren Blevins is the DPW supervisor, Jamie Etheridge is the water superintendent and Joe Harris is the sewer superintendent.
"I want to thank everyone associated with the Walker Department of Public Works," Mayor Font says. "Everyone who calls Walker home appreciates their hard work and dedication to the community."
The Louisiana Rural Water Association is a non-profit organization that helps small water and wastewater systems in all 64 parishes through training and on-site technical assistance in operation, maintenance and regulations of such operations.
