Hydrant Flushing & Testing Program

The Town of Walker's Water Department will begin flushing fire hydrants on November 30, 2009. The process will last for approximately three weeks and will occur daily [Monday through Thursday] between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

As a result of the flushing procedure, residents in the immediate vicinity of the work may experience temporary discoloration of their water. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and precipitates. Therefore, it does not affect the safety of the water. This condition is temporary, with water quality returning to normal as flushing is completed. Customers are encouraged to check their cold water supply prior to using the water. If discoloration is discovered, customers should flush their cold water lines ONLY for a short period until the discoloration clears.

At the conclusion of the flushing program, residents are encouraged to flush hot water heater tanks to remove any accumulations. This same philosophy of water line preventive maintenance is one that you should use in your own home. Your home's water heater should be drained and flushed at least once a year to keep it working efficiently and to protect the quality of water inside your home. Also, if you go out of town and there is no water use in your home for a week or more, when you return, it's always a good idea to run all your faucets for a minute or so before using the water. This ensures that you don't use any stagnant water that may have developed in your home's pipes while you were away.

The Town of Walker apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause our local water customers. However, the flushing and testing program is necessary to ensure proper fire hydrant operation and high quality water.

During the process, Water Department personnel will be working in and near the road. Motorists are encouraged to slow down and use caution when approaching Town crews performing this work.

Everyone's cooperation and understanding is appreciated during this important program. For additional information on the fire hydrant flushing and testing program, please call the Water Department Superintendent Jamie Etheridge at 225-665-2467.
