On exhibit now: John Gallagher

John Gallagher is an attorney/lobbyist and South Louisiana resident for the last 18 years after living in the Washington, D.C. area and working on the staff of former U.S. Sen. John Breaux. He has been interested in photography since his days in high school and college in Shreveport. However, his camera took a back seat to law school, while he focused on a career with the Louisiana Department of Justice, and for the last 10 years as a staff attorney/legislative director at the Louisiana Municipal Association.
John has renewed his interest in photography while traveling the United States and Europe over the past five years. An admirer of the works of Ansel Adams and Art Wolfe, John has worked to refine his photography skills and style by focusing his attention and camera on the Southwestern United States and, most recently, exploring the Atchafalaya Basin Swamp in Louisiana. The last two years, Gallagher has been seeking to capture the unique landscapes of such diverse locations as Death Valley National Park in California and the lands of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona and Southern Utah.
When not traveling on his own, Gallagher has participated in photo treks with Popular Photography Magazine's Mentor Series and also the Friends of the Arizona Highways Magazine. John has worked under noted nature and wildlife photographers such as Bill Durrence, John Reddy, David Tejada and Navajo photographer Leroy DeJolie. Most recently, John participated in workshops to the Atchafalaya Basin under the guidance of noted photographer C.C. Lockwood.
"The images at the Walker Museum Community Art Gallery are being displayed to express an appreciation of the outdoors and hopefully expose gallery visitors to images of places which are rarely experienced by the average traveler or tourist by providing a unique and abstract perspective of these rare and beautiful landscapes, both above and below ground," Gallagher says.
The exhibit runs through June 26. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
