Fall Ball is back
Put on your cleats and get out the bat. Walker Parks & Recreation is again offering Fall Ball to players of all ages. You can put together your own team of kids, men, women or co-ed, and play against others in the community. Registration is $350 per team, and deadline is Sept. 1. Play begins Sept. 20. Sign up at the Walker Department of Public Works, 30100 Stump Street.
Walker Public Works named best in the state
The Walker Department of Public Works has received highest honors this year from the Louisiana Rural Water Association. Our DPW was named Energy Conservation System of the Year for its dedication to providing safe drinking water and efforts to maintain a cleaner environment. Walker was chosen from all water and wastewater systems across the state in 64 parishes. To read more, click here.
Learn the facts before you vote
Our community will vote in October on new rules governing alcohol sales inside the city limits. The City of Walker is hosting public informational meetings to give voters an advance look at the referendum as well as a proposed ordinance to govern sales. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. The sessions will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 and 6 p.m. Aug. 10 at the Municipal Building, 10136 Florida Blvd.
Crime-fighting and fireworks
Join us in Walker for the Livingston Parish National Night Out Against Crime. It begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, in the Winn Dixie Parking Lot. The event is being hosted by the City of Walker, the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office and area law-enforcement agencies. There will be rides, games, learning activities and tours of crime-fighting equipment, followed by a fireworks show at dusk.
Independent audit finds city's finances are in tip-top shape
We spent less than we brought in - $1.4 million less - cutting expenses by 13%. We reduced our debt by nearly $1.2 million. And we had an ending balance of nearly $2.3 million. We also put more money into improving the quality of life we all treasure, namely parks and recreation, cultural events, beautification and landscaping, and law enforcement. Forecasters are predicting 18 named tropical storms, with 10 of them becoming hurricanes, and half of those expected to be Category 3 or higher.
